I visited AJ in 2025 while assisting a student with MBBS admission. I also know BDS and MDS students from several batches.

I liked the campus and its location within Mangalore. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery stood out in the feedback I received; applicants should assess the current department and faculty for their intended specialty.

A.J. Institute of Dental Sciences is an excellent undertaking of the Laxmi Memorial Education Trust. This premier educational organization is the concoction of educationist and philanthropist Dr. A J Shetty. The college seeks to achieve the objective of “Health for All” by providing a worldwide standpoint of Dental Education. The college was established in the year 2002. It is affiliated with the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bangalore, and is recognized by the Dental Council of India. The Institute combines high academic exhibitions, professional perspectives, and allegiance to Humanitarian values. 

COURSES AND FEE STRUCTURE

The BDS course comprises 4 academic years and 1 year of mandatory internship. The curriculum of BDS, teaching methods, and examination rules are as per the guidelines of the respective bodies. The candidates seeking admission to the BDS course are required to qualify for the NEET-UG Entrance Examination. The candidates also must be 17 years of age. The MDS program is 3 academic years. The candidates seeking admission to MDS are required to qualify for the NEET-MDS Entrance Examination. The candidates must also be registered dental practitioners by any State Dental Council. MDS is offered in the following departments:

The institute’s library helps the students to acquire knowledge by providing a conducive learning environment. The total area of the library is 14550 sq. ft. There are different reading sections for undergraduate and postgraduate students. There is also a section of digital library available for the students. The library has a seating capacity of a total of 200 students. It is under electronic surveillance so that books cannot be taken outside of the library. The library has well-trained staff. It has a plentiful collection of books, journals, articles, library dissertations, periodicals, and theses. The college campus is Wi-Fi enabled which enables the students to access internet services within the college campus anytime. The institute believes that physical health contributes to mental well-being. Keeping this in mind there is a gymnasium available on the campus of the college. It has separate timing for boys and girls and also has male and female trainers respectively.  There are separate hostels for boys and girls. The hostel rooms are spacious and well-ventilated. The rooms have attached washrooms also with hot water facilities. They have a common room for television, indoor games, newspaper and magazine reading. The hostel mess provides good and hygienic food. Air-conditioned rooms are available on request. The institute has a fleet of buses that runs efficiently on various routes for its students. The college auditorium is air-conditioned and has a seating capacity of 950 students. It is used for conferences, meetings, cultural events, workshops, and seminars.  AJIMS food court is open till late hours to provide meals to the students. The cafeteria has proper seating arrangements and they serve food of high quality. There are separate sections for Staff members and students. The college also offers various sports facilities. They have grounds for football, volleyball, throwball, cricket and an indoor stadium for badminton and table tennis.
